‘A women’s beauty is in whom she is and her actions, not what she looks like or what she wear’s” Zohra Sarwari
This is a question that has arisen many a time. What is funny is all the different
answers that people will give me, when I ask them this question. I have done a
survey and these are the 5 most popular answers that I have gotten, thus far.
- They wear it to be modest.
- They wear it to obey their husbands.
- They wear it because it is their tradition.
- They wear it because it is their culture.
- They wear it because they are forced to do it.
Well I hate to tell you that none of these answers are correct. Would you like to
know the real reason why Muslim women wear the headscarf (hijab)? It is
because their Lord has asked them to wear it. It is a commandment from the
Creator to the Muslim Woman.
“Oh Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the
believers to draw their outer garments close around them. That will be
better, that they may be known (as Muslims) and not be bothered.”
(The Qur’aan: Chapter 33, Verse 59)
I hope that this clears the misconception about why Muslim women wear the
hijab. Of course you have some cases where the women are forced to wear it,
but that is not the norm. Usually in those situations they don’t even know that it
is a commandment from their Lord, the Creator. This usually happens in 3 rd
World Countries, due to lack of education.
I would like to offer you a book that I wrote “Are Muslim Women
Oppressed?” This book will discuss in depth about the Muslim Woman’s
role, her status, her attire in detail, plus more, inshAllaah.
